Throwback Thursday! Bristol Burlesque Festival

With burlesque so on my mind recently, and the Festival coming up, this week, instead of a usual #flashbackfriday post I decided to throw you back to this time last year and the first ever Bristol Burlesque Festival!

2014’s Festival starts tonight and is set to be as awesome, vibrant and damn right weird as last years. Tonight’s show is sold out, but if you’re quick you may be able to grab tickets for Friday and Saturday‘s shows, or one of the amazing workshops running all day Saturday!

Bristol Burlesque Festival 2013 was the culmination of almost a year’s work by myself (as Tiger Tiger) and Tuesday Laveau (of CoochieCrunch). We hosted three shows, and worked in conjunction with Bristol’s Dr Sketchy’s and Pink Kitten Dance School to team up with a burlesque life drawing class and a couple of great workshops. The shows were diverse but all showcased aspects that make burlesque in Bristol so awesome – we had a live band night, with girls stripping alongside two awesome bands (old school with a modern twist), a full on wild night of whips, ballet and beds of nails, and an intimate show for the true connoisseur.

Bristol’s history of modern burlesque and cabaret dates back to over a decade, when the city saw the start of its own neo-burlesque revival, and the makings of a strong burlesque community that continues to grow each year. Like some renowned burlesque cities, such as America’s New York, Bristol has developed its own brand of burlesque, much like the locally produced music and arts. The shows and performers are deeply artistic, full of attitude and often off the wall weird. It is a city that boasts some renowned southwest performers, who are known both nationally and internationally, and a plethora of cutting edge shows.

It was the inspiration we took from the city’s diverse and rich arts scene that led us to create Bristol’s first ever burlesque festival. As Tuesday said – burlesque is a wide genre and that it was important to her to “create a show that I would want to dance at”. And we did that. We created a Festival aimed at bringing the local burlesque scene together in celebration. Each of the shows were filled with so much creativity, positivity and love from performers and audiences alike!

I may have retired now and handed over my production reigns to the amazing Dis Charge, but I will never stop being proud of what we created and am so excited to see what the future holds!

It was hard to narrow it down, but here’s a selection of some images from the last year’s Festival that really touch my heart! And you can also watch a video from the Thursday and Friday night 2013 shows here.
